Sony tops men's singles, 2 golds for host China

(Changzhou, September 28) The 2008 China Masters wrapped up 5-day competitions this afternoon in the Changzhou Olympic Sports Center as Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro vanquished Chen Jin in straight sets to take his first Masters title while the Chinese shuttlers' efforts have yielded good results in mixed doubles and women's doubles.

In the men's singles final, China's Chen Jin, who was plagued by injuries met Sony Dwi Kuncoro. The Indonesian just took the Japan Open title and continued his form in Changzhou, beating favorite Bao Chunlai in the semifinal.

Chen fell in the first set 19-21 on several errors in the last minutes and failed to turn the table in the second due to leg injury, losing 18-21.

In doubles, world No.1 pair Kido Markis/Setiawan Hendra of Indonesia pulled off the clash against Chinese pair Xu Chen and Sun Junjie 21-17, 24-22 to win the title.

On the women's side, Zhou Mi of Hong Kong edged out Chinese rookie Wang Lin in the singles final. Zhou relied on her experience to take the first 21-19 and Wang evened the score after winning the second 21-19. The veteran Zhou set her pace in the last set to overcome Wang 21-16 for the victory.

Cheng Shu and Zhao Yunlei won the doubles title by surmounting Zhang Dan and Zhang Zhibo of Macao in a lopsided final, winning 21-14, 21-11.

The mixed doubles title went to Chinese Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen, who cleaned up on Widianto Nova/Natsir Liliyana of Indonesia 21-17, 21-17.
